NMCC BASEBALL TEAM GIVES UP 14 IN THE FIRST IN CLASS 4, DISTRICT 1 TOURNAMENT LOSS TO PERRYVILLE
Perryville scored 14 runs in the opening inning to take control of New Madrid County Central in its first-round matchup of the Class 4, District 1 Tournament at VFW Stadium in Sikeston on Saturday.
The Pirates wound up defeating the Eagles 17-1 in five innings, but the most significant blow came when NMCC could not get one of the first 14 batters out.
Derek Kirn led off the inning by drawing a hit by pitch and would come around to score on a Joshua Hoehn triple to left field. Hoehn then came into score the second run of the inning, on an error from the left fielder Ethan Colbert.
Then after Jerome Simpson drew a walk — and Austin Schaumburg courtesy-ran for him and eventually ended up on third base on a stolen base and an error — Trent Unterreiner hit a sharp single to center field, scoring Schaumburg and giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead.
A pair of walks to Kwaid Fears and Drew Korando then loaded the bases for Connor Steffens. Steffens hit a line drive to left field, but only one run crossed the plate as Perryville (14-9) extended its lead to 4-0.
Ross Hadler would join-in as well, as he hit a single to center field, scoring Fears and Korando. Then after three singles in a row, from Derrick Roberts, Kirn, and Hoehn, the Pirates led 10-0 with still not an out recorded.
Perryville wound up scoring four more runs in the inning to make it 14-0, and the Eagles did not have any response after that.
Even though NMCC could not get into a rhythm against Perryville, head coach Joseph McClarty said that the effort was still there.
“First inning just got away from us, really got away from us,” McClarty said. “I mean, we spotted them two touchdowns. They put the ball in play, we booted a few around, and it snowballed on us early. We just couldn’t recover from it, but the kids didn’t quit, and we kept fighting.
“Finally got a kid in there, Jacob came in and started throwing some strikes, and we played better defense, and you know, you hate to go out like that. Losing is one thing, but when you feel like that, you just let it get away from you so early, its tough, its tough on the seniors and you know, it is what it is.”
NMCC finishes the season at 8-13, while Perryville will face-off against Sikeston on Monday at 4:30 p.m., in the semifinals of the Class 4, District 1 Tournament at VFW Stadium.
