MCFERREN HOPING FOR A DIFFERENT SEASON IN SECOND YEAR BACK WITH NEW MADRID
Head Coach: Lennies McFerren (12-14)
Last Season: 12-14
Postseason: Lost to Caruthersville in the Class 3, District 1 semifinals 56-54 in overtime.
Notes: New Madrid County Central hasn’t had a winning season since the 2014-15 campaign.
This season, the Eagles look to make noise with a team filled with upperclassmen — they have six seniors and three juniors on the roster.
Seniors Ke’von Williams and Christen Phillips will look to be the team’s leading scorers after averaging 9.6 and 9.1 points per game, respectively, last season.
Additionally, Donnie Brown, Ansel Underwood, and Bryshawn Williams are three others that McFerren hopes will step-up. Brown averaged 7.6 points per game on 52 percent shooting, while Underwood finished with 4.5 points per contest on 41 percent shooting.
Primarily a non-scorer last season, Williams averaged 2.5 points per game, but led the team in drawn charges, with 10.
“All of them,” said McFerren on which returners he expects to step-up the most. “They all have a chance to play, and they’re seniors. Bryshawn [Williams], Christen [Phillips], and Austin [Davis] all played football, so you got to have a little bit of that toughness from football, and that’s what I’m liking.”
McFerren added that he thinks that his second-year back with the Eagles will be different, which he hopes will end with a different outcome as well.
“This coming year is going to be a little bit different from last because last year was my first year with the students,” McFerren said. “This year, they know a little bit more on what to expect from me and what I expect from them, we’re getting to know each other a little bit better.
“I’m excited about this upcoming season because last year, the players gave everything they had.”
